Using a photograph taken in Yellowstone in 1988 by a fellow firefighter, I was inspired to paint Interim Refuge,  the first image in my series Yellowstone Revisited.  My friend is neither an artist nor a professional photographer, but he was able to capture a near perfect composition that relayed a story of the wonders and frailties of nature.

In the foreground, is a group of elk grazing by the tranquil waters of the Madison River; this scene of serenity is in sharp contrast to the smoke filled skies and the destruction of the forest on the opposite bank, leading the viewer to ask, “how truly permanent is this sanctuary?”
